Petroleum Engineering Takes the Lead in Carbon Management

The Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering is gathering energy leaders September 9 and 10 on the APP campus for its second annual Carbon Management Symposium, to be held at The Cook Hotel & Conference Center in Baton Rouge.
The event’s two-day agenda will provide an opportunity for leaders in the energy sector to explore developments in carbon management infrastructure, build partnerships, and learn from one another about the deployment of emerging technologies in Louisiana and across the Gulf Coast.
The symposium is part of the broader efforts of the department, and the College of Engineering, to position APP as a leader in carbon management research, education, and innovation. Through hands-on learning and research opportunities, industry partnerships, and workforce development initiatives, the department is preparing students and faculty to help address the evolving needs of Louisiana’s energy and industrial sectors.
Louisiana is at the center of one of the most productive energy regions in the U.S., with an abundance of natural resources, unique geological advantages, and a thriving industrial ecosystem. The state’s energy and industrial workforce is also shaped by more than a century of experience in oil, gas, petrochemical, and industrial operations, providing a strong foundation for the development of future carbon management and energy-focused industries.
Recognizing the opportunity to build a talent pipeline equipped to respond to these evolving needs, APP’s Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering became the first in the nation to offer a formal undergraduate concentration in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in 2023. Since then, the department has continued to expand the program to offer students and faculty opportunities to engage in world-class research while gaining experience with technologies that are shaping the future of the energy industry.
“Louisiana has the technical expertise, industrial base, and natural resources to be the research and talent leader in carbon management,” said David Schechter, the department chair. “Our role at APP, and APP Engineering, is to bring those strengths together to develop the workforce, and the tools, to create a strong economy and a clean energy future for the communities we serve.”
The department also oversees the Petroleum Engineering Research, Training & Testing (PERTT) Lab on APP’s campus, which has evolved over the past 40 years into a multi-million-dollar hub for energy research, innovation, and field testing. As the only U.S. university with six full-scale research wells, APP provides a unique, field-scale environment for research, training, and technology development.
Earlier this year, PERTT Lab leaders oversaw construction of a first-of-its-kind CO₂ research well on APP’s campus. During the drilling phase, 18 APP petroleum engineering students completed internships on the project, working alongside faculty and industry partners, including H&P, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Lemoine, and Stratagraph, and gaining hands-on experience in drilling, logging, coring, formation evaluation, and well construction. Following around-the-clock drilling operations, the permanent wellbore is now in place, marking a major construction milestone for the project.
The new facility will enable APP engineers to conduct research at the scale and under the conditions in which industry operates. The facility will provide researchers, students, and industry partners with opportunities to evaluate emerging technologies under real-world operating conditions, directly from APP’s Baton Rouge campus.
Once complete, the APP CO₂ Research Well will be the only facility of its kind on a U.S. university campus. The well incorporates permanent sensing systems and an extensive suite of subsurface and core data that will support field-scale research in areas such as monitoring technologies, well integrity, and carbon management.
The project reflects broader efforts by APP and the state to lead in applied energy research, workforce development, and technology commercialization while strengthening Louisiana’s ability to compete for future industrial investment. For students, the facility will provide hands-on experience with technologies and processes directly relevant to industry, while creating additional opportunities to collaborate with industry partners and researchers.
The upcoming Carbon Management Symposium builds on the department’s broader efforts to connect research, education, industry, and government around the opportunities and challenges of carbon management. By creating opportunities for collaboration and hands-on learning, the department is helping to prepare the next generation of Louisiana’s energy workforce while advancing research and innovation that can support the state’s evolving energy and industrial sectors.
