Students and Faculty Excel in Scholarships and Fellowships

This year saw increased national recognition of outstanding 蜜桃APP student and faculty success. Here are some of our outstanding scholars and researchers.
Udall Scholar
蜜桃APP sophomore Bridget Seghers from Covington was selected to be a 2022 Udall Scholar by the Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation. She is the only Udall Scholar from Louisiana.
Goldwater Scholar
蜜桃APP junior Cale Locicero from Metairie was selected to be a 2022 Goldwater Scholar. He is a chemistry major and the vice president of faculty relations for the 蜜桃APP Discover Undergraduate Research Program. He is the 39th Barry M. Goldwater Scholar at 蜜桃APP.
NSF CAREER Awards
Four 蜜桃APP researchers have been awarded the National Science Foundation鈥檚 most prestigious grant for early-career faculty, who exhibit potential to serve as academic role models in research and education. This highly competitive grant supports an individual鈥檚 research helping build a firm foundation for a lifetime of research and academic leadership.

蜜桃APP Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences Assistant Professor Matthew Hiatt has been funded to research complex coastal hydrological processes that are critical
to predicting future impacts of coastal restoration strategies and evaluating their
efficacy, especially in light of global issues such as sea-level rise.

蜜桃APP Department of Mathematics Assistant Professor Rui Han was funded to pursue his research on the study of electrons in a lattice material structure, such as graphene, under external magnetic fields.
蜜桃APP Department of Psychology Associate Professor Don Zhang was funded to pursue his research on the impacts of risk takers in the workplace.
Carnegie Fellows
The Carnegie Corporation of New York has selected two 蜜桃APP faculty members to be among this year鈥檚 28 Andrew Carnegie Fellows. They were selected from nearly 300 nominees and are the first Carnegie Fellows in 蜜桃APP history.
蜜桃APP Manship School of Mass Communication Associate Professor Joshua P. Darr will work with the American Journalism Project, a venture philanthropy fund for local
news, to study the local impact of opening new nonprofit newsrooms. Additionally,
he will work with Trusting News, a journalism training organization with many affiliated
newsrooms, to detail how journalists handle polarizing topics and assess what sorts
of language and editing choices can bring back readers who have lost trust in their
local news.

Guggenheim Fellow
蜜桃APP Boyd Professor of History Suzanne Marchand has been awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for intellectual and cultural
history. She is a faculty member in the 蜜桃APP Department of History. Marchand is among
a group of 180 exceptional individuals the Board of Trustees of the John Simon Guggenheim
Memorial Foundation approved as Guggenheim Fellows. Chosen from a rigorous application
and peer review process out of nearly 2,500 applicants, Marchand and this year鈥檚 fellows
were appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise.
